Ingredients:

340ml beer

500ml Self-raising flour

½ tsp salt

20-30ml sugar

1 egg

DuoKwik Beer Bread

Instructions:

  1. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl and let it stand for about 20 minutes

  2. Whilst the mixture is standing, light your DuoKwik with about 15 pieces of lumpwood charcoal or briquettes and allow the gas to burn for about 15 minutes (or until the coals begin to turn grey and are burning well)

  3. Turn off the gas and remove the coals to a safe, dry, non-flammable area such as a spare cooking pot, leaving only 4-5 in the DuoKwik bowl

  4. Pour the mixture into an oiled, cast-iron bread baking pot and place the pot on the 4-5 coals left in the DuoKwik bowl and then place about 4-5 coals on the lid and bake for about one hour. Depending on the ambient temperature and the quality of your charcoal/briquettes, you may have to add to, or remove from, the quantities indicated above and this is why you light a few extra coals in the DuoKwik to start with

  5. If you want to use butter, pour it over the baking bread in the last 3 to 5 minutes of baking

  6. When it is golden brown, remove the pot from the DuoKwik bowl and let it stand for five minutes in the pot before removing and serving warm

  7. Alternatively, you can also make this bread in an oven, baking it at 190°C for 40 minutes, but it is not nearly as tasty or as much fun as baking it in the DuoKwik bowl!
